The five of us from CIU stood talking quietly at the back of the room, waiting for the event to get rolling. The place was packed, and Sergeant Brandon Day, the media relations officer, looked harried. He had the Port Alma Police Department logo displayed on the large screen at the front of the room, and was alternating between typing madly on his laptop, leaving the room, and hustling back in. I figured they’d made a few last-minute changes to the materials that would be presented in about five minutes.

The room was buzzing with chatter and nervous energy. A few print reporters sat on the chairs that faced the front, and journalists from television networks, radio, and online media were busy getting their equipment set up and testing it. Missy McLaren always chose a seat in the center of the room, and she often used it strategically to torment the police and her colleagues alike, with barbed comments, leading questions, and a range of insinuations that reflected badly on all of us. The very things that made her avid YouTube channel followers keep watching. I’d say there was little doubt that her transition from sports coverage and life hacks to true crime had been a success.

The air was filled with a chorus of buzzing, chiming, ringtones of all descriptions, and a few old-fashioned telephone bells.

I was no exception. Grabbing my device out of my back pocket, I frowned. I was getting a text from an unknown number.

‘Confirming no threat to public safety. Unless you’ve been colluding with Curry Belanger.’

A shiver ran down my spine. It looked like we’d all just received a communique from Mateo Belanger. I glanced around the room. Several of the TV and radio reporters were broadcasting live. It would be easy for Mateo to monitor the progress of the case from literally anywhere in the world. But if the kid had unfinished business in Port Alma, he likely wasn’t too far away.

I was now even more uneasy about the inspector’s promise that the citizens of the city didn’t need to worry anymore. I guessed that would only apply to some of them. Maybe most would be safe, but I wondered how many people would read reports of the text and imagine themselves in the sniper’s sights.

Mateo’s expertise was sort of scary. It
